Missy’s Top TV Binges of 2016
This morning the 2017 Golden Globe nominations hit the press. There’s always a mix of stuff I haven’t even heard of, shit I have no desire to check out and OMG my shit deserves to win!! As we bid adieu to 2016, which has undoubtedly been the year of disappointments, I wanted to highlight a few new binge-worthy shows that certainly did not disappoint.
This is Us
Please see my individual post on This is Us. The show is currently on a break until January 2017 so you have plenty of time to catch up. Obsessed. It reminds me a little bit of Parenthood but something I really enjoy is how the show spans over 30 years so you see the transition of characters throughout time. Grab tissues and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.
Three Golden Globe Nominations: Best TV Series – Drama (obvi), Best Supporting Actress – BOTH Chrissy Metz and Many Moore!
LOVED LOVE! Randomly came across this Netflix original and pretty much crushed this 10 series season in about two days. Here’s the official description of the show “A program that follows a couple who must navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment and other things they were hoping to avoid.” For me, I really liked how the show took me through relationships, all the motions you go through, the things you can’t control, the lows of embarrassment etc. And, you guys are gonna LOVE Gus from the show. Such a cutie.
Unfortunately, no Golden Globe noms here, but looking forward to checking out season 2.
SRSLY? Do I need to even list this? If you don’t have a weekend to spare to watch the first season of Stranger Things than cancel everything and do it now. I don’t care if you have to make cookies for your kids school and office party (ugh I should be doing that right now) for monday, you soo need to watch Stranger Things. Think of ET meets Firestarter! And, OMG WINONA RYDER makes the sickest comeback! And the kids are freaking adorable on the show. I can’t even. Actually, I can – I might have to watch it again. LOVE!
Golden Globe Nominations: YAS!!! Winona is back – nominated for BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS! Houston we have a problem, Stranger Things up against This is Us and GoT for Best TV Series – Drama. I can’t.
Imma give you one reason to get caught up on TNT’s Animal Kingdom. And that’s about all you will need. HOTTIES! But seriously – everyone on this show is really really really really good looking. Matriarch “Smurf” (played by the always amazing Ellen Barkin) leads her family of beautifully chiseled sons in a rally of law breaking crimes. Her grandson enters the mix when his mother overdoses on drugs, but that does not stop the action. Smurf is ruthless and will go to extremes to get her way, I certainly would never fuck with her! But the guys tho – they are so hot. Honestly they could be reciting the bible and I would still watch.
If there is a Golden Globe category for hottest cast of dudes on the screen, this would obviously go to Animal Kingdom.
I will happily not hide my shame in completing the entire first season of Search Party in less than 24 hours. OMG have you even heard of this show? It was awesome. After living in NYC for so many years, I was able to easily identify with the characters and the essence of the city. And honestly, anything that has a Parker Posey cameo will quickly get my attention. Watch the trailer, get involved and let me know if you love it.
The Nigh Of
I literally almost shit myself a few times (figuratively) watching The Night Of. I clenched the remote at the end of my seat (well couch) with one eye open and the other closed saying “don’t do it, don’t do it, don’t it”. Another great show set in New York and to give you a brief overview from IMDBz “After a night of partying with a female stranger, a man wakes up to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder.” This one goes in the binged in under 48 hours category. It’s that good, it’s that intense and…
John Fuckin Turturro owns it and deserves to win that Golden Globe for Best Actor. Riz Ahmed is nominated too, he definitely puts on an incredible performance. The Night Of was also nominated for Best TV Limited Series. Honestly – if the People vs OJ win – I will lose my shit.
High Maintenance consists of these 8 – 15 minute episodes trailing this dude who delivers weed all around NYC. He runs into all different types circumstances which is quite entertaining. I obviously couldn’t stop laughing during the “Passover Dinner” episode. And there are a few more that are great. The episodes are super quick and enjoyable. I don’t think it was necessary though, before each episode to have this character breakdown by the writer and star. I mean, this isn’t inside the actors studio – this is a show about delivering weed. I think they got too much into the weeds with that.
No big surprise it’s not nominated for a Golden Globe. The acting is meh.
